About the Journal
History
The Herald of Social Sciences is a quarterly, multilingual, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal and the oldest periodical in Armenia representing the humanities and social sciences. It was founded in 1940. From 1940 to 1943 it was published as the Proceedings of Social Sciences of Armfan (Armenian Branch of USSR Academy of Sciences). Between 1943 and 1965 it appeared as the Bulletin of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia. In 1966, the journal was renamed Herald of Social Sciences. From 1940 to 1947, it was issued irregularly; from 1948 to 1990, it was published monthly; in 1991, bimonthly; from 1992 to 1995, every three months; and since 1996, every four months. Over the decades, the journal has been headed by distinguished scholars, including H. Orbeli (founder), S. Karapetyan, H. Batikyan, Kh. Momjyan, M. Nersisyan, A. Hovhannisyan, Ts. Aghayan, G. Stepanyan, H. Aslanyan, G. Abov, H. Intchikyan, V. Mikayelyan, A. Kharatyan, and P. Avetisyan. Since 2025, the Editor-in-Chief has been A. Bobokhyan.
Scope and Aims
Interdisciplinary in nature, the journal covers the main fields of the humanities and social sciences, including history, archaeology, ethnography, folklore studies, philology, art history, philosophy, sociology, and related disciplines. A substantial portion of the journal’s content is devoted to Armenian studies. It publishes scholarly articles, reports, documents, reviews, commemorations, and obituaries.Drawing upon the centuries-old traditions and accumulated experience of Armenian social thought, the journal aspires to meet international standards of scholarship.
